The Final Gift
When we think of charity and giving to others, the thought of giving up our lives for a cause is not often considered. And when I say “give up our lives for a cause,” that is really what I mean. This story from the Washington Post via MSNBC is sobering, and a very real part of the war in Iraq. An American soldier made it his mission to help get an Iraqi boy to America for critical heart surgery, and he didn’t live to see firsthand of his success. Variations on this story have been taking place for years with other children and families overseas. We, Americans- and Coalition Allies, are helping an incalculable number of people around the world, most of which goes unseen and unheard by the masses and media. But people, and soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines are making a difference every single day. One day, years from now, Iraqi people will remember the sacrifice of these fine soldiers. At least this Iraqi family will. The very fact that the Iraqi people are afraid to speak publically illustrates, for me, the reason we are there.  If we don’t succeed, or worse, abandon these people, their future and concerns will be far graver, as will ours. Regardless of one’s personal and political views however, is the honor and respect we can show to one individual who gave everything to help another. In that situation, that process and that moment, there was- for this soldier- a need. He became one who could help fill that need. He succeeded. And somewhere I believe he does know, and he is as proud of his achievement as we are. His ”gift” was so much more.. his gave for his country, because he was asked, because he saw it as his duty. Let us not forget.
