Charity Badge from Six Degrees
You’ll notice the new “badge” to the right with the One Back logo and a list of charities I hope to support. What a great idea from SixDegrees.org. It seems this is a collaborative effort from several celebrities, especially Kevin Bacon- hence the name. You can choose to donate to any of the charities listed through the link and the badge will keep track of all contributions. Six Degrees is affiliated with Network for Good, and will provide documented records for your gift if desired. Or you can go and create your own badge for your site if you wish. I think it’s a great tie-in to the site and hope people will consider making a donation. Kevin Bacon has even offered to match donations for the leading badges/sites up to $10,000 through March 31st, although that is probably unlikely here since I just started!  Maybe we’ll have a contest for the first donation or something…

I chose the charities on my list for the following reasons:
- Make-a-Wish: This charity supports the dreams of children who are very sick… many with terminal illnesses. To help see a child smile and attain a dream or wish, and knowing they may not have much time or opportunity to do that… it’s truly a gift.
- Operation Blessing: This organiztion helps with international relief in time of need, disaster, emergencies, etc. They have a good ratio of administrative expenses to operational expenses, and the money gets to those in need. Not only do they support with food, clothing and supplies, but they also help with community development and tools for teachers to educate children.
- Meals-on-Wheels: Quite simply, this charity helps provide food to those in need across the country. They are especially focused on supporting the elderly and disabled, and for some people it is a critical function.
- Disabled American Vets: I don’t need to explain why this organization is so important in recent years, but suffice it to say that anything we can do to help our disabled military veterans is important. Many of them have a hard time re-adjusting to normal life… as normal as it can be when you are disabled.
- Students in Free Enterprise: This organization promotes education and business development across the world for students, especially in post-secondary education settings. These students go on to provide key leadership roles in communities and businesses within their respective nations, and help foster freedom and liberty throughout the world. Education and business skills are key elements to helping a society grow, especially in third-world regions.
Choosing a charity is often a very personal aspect of one’s giving focus, but I thought it important to share why I chose the above organizations. Thanks for reading!
