Busy Times, but Hopeful Times
Time flies when you’re having fun… or not! Actually I’ve been engrossed in classes, both the Spring semester ending, and summer as well. It has been a whirlwind of research and activity, and my focus lately is on Family Economics. What is life if not about learning and growth? I’ve learned immensely of the economic and financial challenges that families face, as well as how poverty continues to affect millions across the nation and globe. So much we normally take for granted, but when you really look at the numbers it is staggering. I even found that within my home state rural poverty outpaces metropolitan poverty by 10%, which is not something I had even considered.Â
Financial Literacy is another area of my focus, and I recently came across an organization called Operation Hope. They are a non-profit, public-benefit organization dedicated to the eradication of poverty and economic empowerment. Operation Hope has a lengthy list of partnerships, initiatives, programs, and volunteer involvement and continue with robust support from both former President Clinton and President Bush’s Bi-Partisan U.S. Community Development Advisory Board at the Treasury Department. It’s good to see vision put in action, and Operation Hope does just that.
If we truly want to eradicate poverty, if we truly want to create social change, if we truly want to make a difference in our community, we cannot do it on a partisan political basis.  John Hope Bryant
