the letters stand for a secret motto which only members know.
For example:
Phi Beta Kappa (formerly a social fraternity but is now an honor society, all their info is public) stands for: philosophia biou kybern?t?s — “Love of learning is the guide of life.”
They have Greek names because they are part of the Greek system that uses the Greek alphabet to get their names. I know of no houses that their name has a secret meaning, including the one I am in.
Fraternities and sororities are organizations that help build leadership, philanthropy, social, and academic skills to get through school and the rest of your life. There are some that do focus too much on the social, and those are the house that give the Greek system a bad name. Schools require the Greek system to get better grades than everybody else, so we have required study tables that help member learn to study and do good in grades. All the houses have a philanthropy to give to the community. Furthermore, the houses are structured and have leadership inside the house, which can be a benefit for the future. It is cheaper to live in a fraternity than the dorms, at my school and a lot of others that I know, so the people that say you have to have money are full of lies. Finally, you get to network for the future by meeting people that can help you.
